What is the Office?

Ecumenical gatheringThe Office of Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs is responsible for assisting the Archdiocese of Indianapolis (Archbishop, Catholic Center, Deaneries, Parishes and pastoral staffs) in nurturing relations with people of faith, whether Christian or non-Christian.

The Office is the main support to Archbishop Thompson in his responsibility to promote unity – a unity that goes beyond maintaining the internal unity of the Archdiocese and unity with the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world.  For in his role as our pastor, he is charged with promoting and fostering relationships with other Christians so that one day all Christians will be one (ecumenical).  And in his role as our leader, he is charged with promoting and fostering relationships with other faith traditions (interreligious), all which form a fabric knitted together of faith expressions, human cultures and peoples in common purpose.

The Office is a main support to all who are involved in ministry throughout the Archdiocese in their ecumenical and interreligious relationships.  These may include joint outreach and advocacy for the local community.

The Office is a part of the Secretariat for Pastoral Ministries.
