A Campus Minister at Brebeuf Jesuit educates students in mind and spirit by incorporating the best traditions of Jesuit, Catholic education. Working closely with the Vice President for Mission and the Director of Campus Ministry, you will establish and nurture the faith life of the school community by coordinating the execution of regular school-wide Masses and prayer services and developing other student formation opportunities. A Campus Minister at Brebeuf Jesuit will assist the Director of Campus Ministry with the execution of our student retreat program and other student formation activities. Ongoing professional enrichment opportunities are supported and encouraged.
Primary Focus: Coordinating with student leaders, the Director of Campus Ministry, and the Vice President for Mission to facilitate the liturgical and prayer life of the school community, while providing on-going pastoral support to students.
Overall Aim of Campus Ministry Department, shared by both Director of Campus ministry and Campus Minister:
- Give living witness to the Gospel and the Mission and Core Values of Brebeuf Jesuit, making the Gospel and our mission and values attractive to all in the Brebeuf Jesuit Community and to those whom our community encounters.
- Support the spiritual needs of the community as they arise (crises, funerals, urgent prayer needs).
- Be present and available to the student body at Brebeuf Jesuit as our students explore questions of faith, confront the struggles of teenage life, and celebrate and savor their experiences of success and growth -- listening more than giving advice or counsel and being prepared to direct students to other professionals when appropriate.
- Contribute to a collegial and mission-driven department culture.
- Participate in campus-wide faith formation events and mission weeks.
- Be visible and accessible to students as spiritual companions.
- Support the Vice President for Mission in implementing strategic mission initiatives.
- Participate in review of liturgical and retreat programs, calendar of events, worship and retreat leadership participation, and scope and sequence of Ignatian content on an annual basis.
- Represent Campus Ministry at:
- Monthly Diocesan Campus Ministry meetings
- North and Carmel Deanery youth ministry meetings.
- JSN and Jesuit Province meetings.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
(Note: The following list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. Others may be assigned, subject to reasonable accommodations.)
Liturgies, Prayer, & Worship
- Coordinate the execution of all-school and class-level liturgies and prayer services that take place during school hours and some nights or weekends (including creating/printing worship aides and creating/projecting slides).
- Schedule and lead daily Morning Prayer (with attention to religious diversity) and the afternoon Examen.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate liturgies and worship for Holy Days and other major religious holidays.
- Ensure setup, hospitality, and coordination with presiders and musicians for liturgies and prayer services.
- Recruit and train student leaders for prayer and liturgy.
- Incorporate Ignatian spirituality into liturgical worship and prayer.
- Attend Archdiocesan liturgical events and trainings, such as Senior Mass with the Archbishop, and Brebeuf meetings related to graduation speaker committee and other liturgy-related planning events.
- Communicate summaries from diocesan and liturgical meetings to the Campus Ministry team.
Retreats & Formation Initiatives
- Assist in preparing, communicating (housing, dietary needs, space setup, etc.) and leading half of the retreats and student leader formation initiatives.
- Train student leaders for upcoming retreats.
- Evaluate student participation and feedback, assisting the Director of Campus Ministry in refining programs annually.
Spiritual Support & Formation
- Be available to students through prayer groups, small groups, and individual accompaniment.
- Support religious affinity groups and ensure inclusion of diverse faith traditions in liturgical and worship opportunities.
- Encourage and nurture student-led prayer initiatives (e.g. PRT prayers, prayer walls, classroom prayer).
Budget & Supplies
- Order liturgical and prayer supplies in accord with the department budget for school and Chapel.
- Track expenses related to worship (vestments, candles, music, etc.) and monthly Campus Ministry credit card statements.
Supporting Director of Campus Ministry
- Work closely with the Director of Campus Ministry to align retreat liturgy and worship with goals of the retreat.
- Assist in recruiting adults and students to lead retreats
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required
- BA in Theology/Ministry (or equivalent)
- Practicing Catholic
- Knowledge of Catholic liturgy and ability to plan and coordinate execution of liturgical services including Mass
- Sensitivity to and appreciation for diversity, with demonstrated ability to relate to individuals with compassion
- Ability to excel in a collaborative team environment
- Evidence of effective organizational and interpersonal skills in context of teamwork
- Sensitivity to interfaith issues and openness to facilitating interfaith events or prayer services
- 2-3 years of ministry to adolescent or young adults
Preferred
- MA in Theology/Ministry (or equivalent)
- Youth Ministry Certification
- Experience with retreat organization and/or leadership training
