Position Overview
The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is seeking a detail-oriented and creative Editorial Assistant to support the weekly production of The Criterion, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese. This role is essential to ensuring both the print and digital editions of the publication are accurate, visually engaging, and produced on deadline.
The ideal candidate brings basic layout/design abilities, strong writing skills, and excellent organizational talent. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful storytelling while supporting the mission of the Catholic Church in central and southern Indiana.
Primary Responsibilities
Newspaper Production & Design
- Create the digital layout for a 20+ page weekly newspaper, ensuring consistency in branding and style.
- Prepare layout files and convert them into print-ready PDFs for contracted printing vendors.
- Design graphics, visual elements, front-page layouts, and special sections for The Criterion.
- Place advertising and maintain appropriate ad ratios to optimize postage costs.
Editorial & Content Support
- Write brief news stories, event coverage, photo captions, and other short editorial assignments.
- Proofread and fact-check articles for accuracy, clarity, style, and grammar.
- Assist with digital content updates and maintenance on The Criterion’s website.
Administrative & Production Coordination
- Communicate weekly with printing, mail sorting, and database companies, offering information and troubleshooting as needed.
- Distribute the newspaper throughout the Catholic Center.
- Provide research, administrative support, and occasional photography assistance to the editor, assistant editor, and reporters.
- Maintain the publication’s library of fonts, logos, and official photographs.
- Compile relevant data to support key performance indicators as directed by the editor.
Qualifications
- Basic proficiency in layout and design software (e.g., Adobe InDesign or similar).
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet weekly deadlines.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Experience in journalism, communications, graphic design, or related fields preferred.
