Immigrants, refugees escape persecution and poverty for the promise of a better life

RefugeesThe volunteer teacher from Catholic Charities Indianapolis points to the copy of the Declaration of Independence on the classroom wall, stressing the words “Life” and “Liberty” that he has written in big, bold, black letters. For the 14 immigrants and refugees who have enrolled in this class to pursue their dream of becoming American citizens, those two words have become the essence of their lives. When the teacher explains the role of the Declaration of Independence in the birth of the United States as a nation, the students hear a story marked by courage, sacrifice and hope. (Page 1)

Cardinal Tobin encourages Catholics to ‘dream the dreams of God’ at African Mass

African MassCardinal Joseph W. Tobin may have Irish in his blood, but he has ties to Africa as well—since June of 2013, he has served as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) subcommittee on the Church in Africa. Yet in his four years as Archbishop of Indianapolis, he has not had an opportunity to celebrate the annual African Catholic Mass for the African community of the archdiocese. He fit that pleasure in just weeks before leaving for his new role as Archbishop of Newark, N.J. (Pages 9)
