Below is the listing of the itinerary for each day of the Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Poland that is taking place May 12-21. (Prayer intentions)


Friday, May 12                                                                  

11:30 a.m.  Meet your travel director, Othmar Grueninger, at the Northwest Airlines ticket counter.  Bring your bag to the ticket counter to check in (remember, not more than 50 pounds.)  Have your passport ready to show.  You will receive your boarding pass to go to the gate.

 1:24 p.m.    Depart Indianapolis via NW flight #1010

2:37 p.m.     Arrive Detroit  and proceed to the international gate.

4:05 p.m.    Depart Detroit on NW #40.

Settle back; have dinner and a movie and try to get some sleep.


Saturday, May 13                                                    
Arrive Warsaw, Poland

 5:55 a.m.      Arrive Amsterdam and change to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

 9:20 a.m.      Depart Amsterdam on KLM flight #8363.

 11:15 a.m.      Arrive Warsaw.

 Arrive at lovely Warsaw on the Vistula (Wisa) River around noon.  Although the exact date is unknown, it is believed to have been founded in the 14th century.  Note that all the history of Poland is intertwined with the Catholic Church.

Depart on a sightseeing drive of the capital of Poland with Mass at the Cathedral of St. John, one of the city’s oldest churches.  View the Old Town (Stare Miasto) surrounded by 17th and 18th century Renaissance and baroque houses, the Market Square and the newly reconstructed Royal Castle (Zamek.)

Check into hotel for two nights.  Welcome Dinner.

Sunday, May 14                                                                           

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Drive to the small town, Szymanow, to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Jazlowiec. Mass at the Shrine.  Return to Warsaw for the night.  Dinner on own tonight.  Explore one of the Polish restaurants.

Monday, May 15                                                                                 Czestochowa

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.  Morning drive to Czestochowa, the most important and largest pilgrimage shrine in Poland.  See the Jasna Gora Monastery of the Pauline Order with a monk guide. See the Black Madonna picture. 

1:15 p.m.  Have Mass at this Monastery where approximately 5 million pilgrims and tourists visit every year.

Check into our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Tuesday, May 16                                                                                      Cracow

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.  Depart early for the drive to Cracow, a city on the Vistula River.  Steeped in history, it was the capital of Poland from the 11th to the 17th centuries.

Upon arrival at Cracow, a local sightseeing guide will join us for a tour of Cracow, a city popular with tourists.  See Wawel Hill with its castle and cathedral and the Main Market Square and the Cathedral where Pope John was for years.    Have Mass in a local church.

Check into the centrally located hotel by the old town for dinner and two nights.

Wednesday, May 17                              
Zakopane / Wadowice / Cracow

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.  This morning we visit the nearby mountain resort of Zakopane.  Pope John Paul II spent much time hiking in these mountains as a young man.  Have Mass in a local church and some free time to explore the town and for shopping in the local bazaar. 

Depart after lunch (on own) for Wadowice, birthplace of Karol Wajtyla.  Visit the museum that was the house where Pope John Paul II was born. (A Euro 1.50 donation is suggested.)   Also visit the church where he was baptized.

Return to Krakow for the night.  Dinner on your own tonight.


Thursday, May 18                                          
KATOWICE / Train to Prague

Have an early morning Mass at a local church followed by breakfast at the hotel. 

8:30 a.m.  Depart by motorcoach to Katowice for a train ride to Prague, Czech Republic, whose national motto is “Truth Prevails.” 

10:32 a.m.            Depart Katowice with lunch on the train. 

4:46 p.m.          Arrive Prague and be transferred to our hotel for two nights.

Friday, May 19                                                                                        

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.

9:00 a.m.  Depart for a morning city sightseeing of the beautiful city also called Praha, former capital of the Holy Roman Empire.  The Vltava River with its 13 bridges divides the city.  The Little Town, on the west bank is the site of the imposing, beautiful St. Nicholas Church and the Hradcany Castle, a landmark overlooking the city.  Also in the Castle complex is St. Vitus Cathedral, seat of the archbishop of Prague.  The history of this majestic building, only completed in 1929, begins around 926 when St. Wenceslas had the rotunda of St. Vitus built on the same site.  Containing the tombs of Czech kings, this cathedral is an excellent example of gothic architecture.

1:00 p.m.  Celebrate Mass in the Our Lady of Victory Church.

The rest of the afternoon for individual pursuits. 

Farewell Dinner at an authentic Czech restaurant.


Saturday, May 20                                                         
Prague/Flight Home

Buffet breakfast at the hotel before departing for the airport for the return flight home.  Mass at the airport after checking in.

9:30 a.m.     Depart Prague on KLM #8516 with the tour group

11:05 a.m.     Arrive Amsterdam.

                         Change planes to Minneapolis and Indianapolis.

1:10 p.m.      Depart Amsterdam on NW #45.

3:05 p.m.     Arrive Minneapolis and go through U.S. immigration and customs.

6:55 p.m.     Depart Minneapolis on NW 610.             

9:39 p.m.     Arrive Indianapolis.
