Resources for Marriage and Family Life

  • "Men, Women and the Mystery of Love" by Dr. Edward Sri. This book looks at love from the foundation of friendship, understanding the mystery of emotions, seeking authentic intimacy, understanding the role of purity and chastity, ultimately helping men and women to understand the role that each of them plays in the love that they share. Based on the book "Love and Responsibility" by Karol Wojtyla, this new interpretation for today's engaged couple provides insightful topics, points to ponder, and resources for further reading. This is a great resource for couples thinking about marriage or preparing for marriage.

Spirituality for Husbands and Wives

  • "Forever: A Catholic Devotional for Your Marriage" by Jackie Francois Angel and Bobby Angel. This devotional co-written by a Catholic married couple includes a reflection to read, a question to discuss and a short prayer that spouses can pray together. The content is based on the Theology of Marriage through the lens of Theology of the Body, but it is very accessible and does not come across as academic. The questions provide good food for thought and discussion. A small book, it is great to keep on your night stand and go through together at the beginning or end of the day.

  • "By Love Refined: Letters to a Young Bride" by Alice Von Hildebrand. This book is a series of fictional letters from mentor Lily to newlywed Julie, spanning the first few years of Julie's marriage to Michael. Through humor, encouragement and the occasional challenge, the letters address the newlywed expectations fo ra perfect marraige, the trails of imperfect couples, and the hope that comes from choosing to love your spouse every day.

Catholic Motherhood

  • "Made for This: The Catholic Mom’s Guide to Birth" by Mary Haseltine.
For many women, birth can seem like a purely clinical experience – something to get through as quickly as possible in order to get on with the joys of being a mother. In Made for This, author Mary Haseltine draws on Pope Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body to show that birth is an essential part of who God created women to be, body and soul. With real-life stories from many moms and practical tips – including preparing for birth, making informed choices, helping fathers embrace their role in the birth room, and encountering the work of labor – this book is a guide for navigating the physical and spiritual dimensions of pregnancy and birth. Expectant mothers will find the tools they need to approach birth as a gift and to invite God into the experience. Mary Haseltine is a certified birth doula, childbirth educator, and theology graduate.

Catholic Family Life

  • “The Catholic Table: Finding Joy Where Food and Faith Meet” by Emily Stimpson Chapman. What does our Catholic faith teach us about eating well? Some of us eat too much food. Or we eat too little. Often, we eat without gratitude, without charity, without respect. But, as award-winning author Emily Stimpson Chapman explains in The Catholic Table, with a sacramental worldview the supernatural gift of God’s grace can transform and heal us through the food we make, eat and share. Thsi book looks at the foodie landscape and contrasts it with a Catholic theology of food. The Church's wisdom, quotes from Saints, stories of food mimracles, the authors' past struggles with eating, and even recipes show us how a proper respect for food leads to peace and joy.
