Providence Sister Dorothy Gartland served in Catholic schools for 24 years

Providence Sister Dorothy Gartland (previously Sister Margaret Eugene), a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on Dec. 25 at Providence Health Care on the campus of her religious community’s motherhouse. She was 96.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 13 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Dorothy was born on Oct. 19, 1929, in St. Joseph, Mo. She entered the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1948, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1955.

Sister Dorothy earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree in elementary education at Indiana University in Bloomington.

During her 78 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Dorothy ministered as an educator in Catholic schools for 24 years in Illinois, Indiana and Washington, D.C. Later, she served in youth ministry, adult education and justice ministry in Chicago.

Sister Dorothy returned to the motherhouse in 2018 and dedicated herself entirely to prayer in 2024.

In the archdiocese, she served at St. Malachy School in Brownsburg from 1957-59.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Kunkel of Dayton, Ohio, and three brothers: Eugene Gartland of Chicago; John Gartland of San Francisco; and William Gartland of West Hills, Calif.
