Providence Sister Joyce Brophy served in education, administration and formation in Indiana

Providence Sister Joyce Brophy (previously Sister Robert Ellen), a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on Aug. 27 at Mother Theodore Hall on the campus of her religious community’s motherhouse. She was 96.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sept. 4 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Joyce was born on March 5, 1929, in Joliet, Ill. She entered the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1947, and professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1955.

Sister Joyce earned a bachelor’s degree in education at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree in education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

During her 78 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Joyce served as an educator in Catholic schools for 32 years in Illinois, Indiana and California. She also ministered in a number of positions in administration and formation within her religious community.

In the archdiocese, Sister Joyce served at the motherhouse as director of postulants from 1965-68 and as director of scholastics from 1968-69. She also ministered as assistant vice-president for development at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College from 1980-82 and at the former Sacred Heart School in Terre Haute from 1995-99.

After retiring from education in 1999, Sister Joyce did volunteer work at the motherhouse and the Providence Conference and Spirituality Center and Connecting Link in West Terre Haute. Beginning in 2019, she dedicated herself entirely to prayer.
