Franciscan Sister Kathryn Holohan served as a missionary in Papua New Guinea
Franciscan Sister Kathryn Holohan (formerly Sister Annata) died on March 26 at the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was 92.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 3 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.
Sister Kathryn was born on Feb. 24, 1933, in Streator, Ill.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Sept. 6, 1954, and professed final vows on Aug. 12, 1960. Two of her sisters, both of whom preceded her in death, were also members of the Oldenburg Franciscans: Sister Cecilia and Sister Doris Holohan.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Marian University in Indianapolis and later studied at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, Philippines.
During 70 years as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sister Kathryn ministered for 26 years as a missionary in Papua New Guinea, ministering in different periods there as an educator in diocesan administration. She also helped to establish an order of women religious for natives of the southeast Asian island nation.
Upon her return to Oldenburg in 1982, Sister Kathryn served in leadership in her religious community until 1994. She later served in parishes in West Virginia before retiring to the motherhouse in 2009.
Sister Kathryn is survived by a brother, Jerry Holohan.
