Providence Sister Margaret Norris served in Catholic education for 49 years

Providence Sister Margaret Norris (formerly Sister Marie Angeline), a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on Nov. 3 at the Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was 94.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Nov. 21 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Margaret was born on Jan. 5, 1931, in Jasper, Ind. She entered the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1949, and professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1957.

Sister Margaret earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree in education at Indiana University in Bloomington.

During her 76 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Margaret served as an educator in Catholic schools for 49 years in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and North Carolina.

In addition to being an educator, Sister Margaret was known for running, competing several times in the famed Boston Marathon. After retiring from teaching, she worked for two years in an exercise facility and studied massage therapy. After retiring to the motherhouse in 2008, Sister Margaret offered massage to the members of her community.

In the archdiocese, Sister Margaret served at St. Michael School in Greenfield from 1965-69.
