Providence Sister Theresa Clare Carr served in Catholic schools for 50 years

Providence Sister Theresa Clare Carr, a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on May 5 at the Mother Theodore Hall on the campus of her religious community’s motherhouse. She was 93.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 8 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Theresa Clare was born on Dec. 20, 1931, in Indianapolis where she attended the former St. Patrick, St. Catherine of Siena and Holy Cross Central schools. She entered the Sisters of Providence from St. Patrick Parish on Jan. 8, 1950, and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1957.

Sister Theresa Clare earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree in elementary education at Indiana University in Bloomington.

During her 75 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Theresa Clare ministered in Catholic education for 50 years, serving in schools in Illinois, Indiana and California. After retiring from full-time ministry in 2002, she remained in Indianapolis until 2017 and ministered as a catechist and substitute teacher. Upon returning to the motherhouse in 2017, Sister Theresa Clare did volunteer ministry among the poor before dedicating herself entirely to prayer in 2020.

In the archdiocese, Sister Theresa Clare served at St. Michael School in Greenfield from 1966-67 and in Indianapolis at St. Matthew the Apostle School from 1967-77, Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ School from 1977-2002, and as a substitute teacher in schools in the Indianapolis South Deanery from 2002-17.

She is survived by a sister, Catherine Warren of Franklin, and brothers Cornelius and Edward Carr, both of Indianapolis, and Michael Carr of Grand Blanc, Mich.
