The HHS mandate and religious freedom

2014 Fortnight for Freedom: June 21 to July 4

Fortnight for Freedom logoFor a third year, the U.S. bishops are once again calling for a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21-July 4, which is a time of prayer and action to address many current challenges to religious liberty.  This year’s theme is Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve, to relate our religious liberty with service to the poor and vulnerable.

During these two weeks, we celebrate the feast days of many martyrs of the Church:  St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.  They were each true to God and the Church in enduring political persecution, which ultimately lead to their martyrdoms, giving the glory to God.

American political legislative issues to which we should give attention during these two weeks include the cases of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties.  These organizations are for-profit businesses who have challenged the U.S. Supreme Court regarding the HHS Mandate.  During the Fortnight for Freedom, these two cases will be topics for the Supreme Court.

A local Fortnight event sponsored by Catholics United for the Faith
will be held Saturday, June 21.
