Letter from Superintendent
Dear Administrators and Teachers,
This science curriculum guide has been prepared by the science subject area committee composed of staff from schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Input has been received from science teachers. Using this input, the subject area committee has set standards of excellence. They have worked under both Archdiocesan Mission Statement as well as the Subject Area Mission Statement. They have also had to be conscious of existing curriculum guides and state issued science academic standards as well as national standards for science.
This guide was developed as a "draft" to meet new Indiana Academic Science Standards in preparation for science adoption during the 2004-2005 school year.
Each school will be given a copy of this guide. It is the hope of the writers that making this "draft" guide available early will speed up the development process during the revision year of 2004-2005.
Also, it is the hope of the writers of the guide that this instrument will be of assistance in instruction of students. Through the learnng of science, students will be enriched and their commitment to life-long learning strengthened.

Mission Statement
Science education in our Catholic schools reflects a balance of knowledge, of skills development, and interactive hands-on learning. This education enables our students to develop powers of logical reasoning and critical thinking as they pursue the "why" and "how" of God's creation. Students apply the scientific processes to solve problems and to communicate effectively based on our Catholic morals and values. Teachers encourage inquiring minds and critical discovery so that our students will be contributing members of society.

Introduction
The demand is greater than ever for people who can read, write, and speak effectively; analyze problems and set priorities; learn new things quickly; take initiative; and work in teams. Technology has already transported us into a time where the next e-commerce opportunity is limited only by our imagination.
That is why Indiana has established new Academic Standards in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. These world-class standards outline what a student should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade level.
