A Week at Bishop Bruté College Seminary
Daily schedule
* 6:00-6:40 Wake-up and shower
Some mornings, you get up, shower, and really mentally prepare for Mass; some mornings, you role out of bed at 6:43 and sprint to the chapel. What is most important, is getting there awake and on time.
6:45-7:30 Mass and Morning Prayer
Even though it’s early, you’d better be prepared to sing. Seminarians lead music, proclaim Mass readings, lead prayer, set up before and after Mass, and serve. And don’t forget Morning Prayer, which combine with the Mass.
7:30 Breakfast
Now that we live off campus, we eat a simple breakfast together at the Seminary. It could be cereal, or maybe some eggs?
8:00-3:00 Classes at Marian College
Now we don’t have classes this entire time. Each of us has between two to four hours of class between these hours. Classes range from Gen-Ed to the many Philosophy classes we take, like Logic, Plato and Aristotle, etc. We also have the opportunity to study outside our Philosophy Major, if we want to. Some men take guitar lessons, racketball, Italian, Latin, or even a Lord of the Rings seminary. All of our classes are taken at Marian, which means we take classes with the everyday college students of the campus. It’s a great way to make friends at school outside the seminary (which is actually allowed). Lunch is buffet style at Marian.
When classes are done, we can hang out on campus, pray, study, socialize, go to Subway, or head back to the Seminary for a nap if needed. This time is ours.
5:00 Evening Prayer
We all gather together back at Seminary in the chapel to pray Evening Prayer together. After prayer, most guys go back to campus for dinner, or some wait to eat. On occasion, maybe the fellas will head out to Fridays, or Taco Bell.
Adoration Times
3 times throughout the week we all gather for a common holy hour of Adoration in our chapel, where we chant in Latin, have incense, serve, and most importantly, pray to the Blessed Sacrament. On Tuesday, we meet at 4:00 p.m. On Thursday, we meet at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, we meet at 9:00 p.m. For the rest of the week, you are asked to find the best time for yourself to pray in Adoration.
Formation
Throughout the year we meet with the Rector several times to discuss how we growing and maturing. We discuss strengths and weaknesses, and continuing expectations as we prepare for Major Seminary. Every Wednesday, we gather for evening prayer, then all together have dinner and a formation conference, lasting usually until 7:30. Also, we are asked to meet regularly with a spiritual director, whom we can be totally honest with about every aspect of our lives: celibacy, prayer, community, anything.
* On Thursdays, we as a seminary meet for Mass at Marian Chapel, with the college community, at 4:30 p.m., and we have Morning Prayer on our own. This gives a day during the week to sleep in, or study, or whatever we need to do. Weekends have occasional requirements, but mostly these are free. If we want, we can go home on weekends, but we are asked not to spend a whole weekend at home anymore then once a month.
