This week, we continue to examine what was going on in the Church and the world 50 years ago as seen through the pages of The Criterion.

Here are some of the items found in the August 16, 1963, issue of The Criterion:

  • Theology of temporal order foreseen as council result
    • “Brussels—One of the results of the Second Vatican Council will be to give Catholicism an explicit and official theology of the temporal order, Cardinal Leon-Joseph Suenens, primate of Belgium and one of the leading personalities of the Council, declared in an interview here. Cardinal Suenens is supervising the work of the commission in Rome preparing for what has been termed ‘Schema 17.’ This is the agenda item covering the relations of the Church to the world. It will deal with contemporary issues, among them international peace, interracial justice, industrial relations, duties to underdeveloped countries and population problems.”

  • Cardinal Cushing offers Mass for Kennedy infant
    • “BOSTON—The Mass of the Angels—Requiem Mass for infants—was offered here for Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, 2-day-old son of President and Mrs. Kennedy, by Cardinal Richard Cushing. … The Kennedy infant died [Aug. 9] in Children’s Hospital here two days after his birth. Cause of death was a respiratory ailment. The baby had been baptized … shortly after he was born prematurely by Caesarean section. … Among the many messages of condolences to the Kennedys upon their loss was one from His Holiness Pope Paul VI.”
