SHINE: Spreading Hope In Neighborhoods Everywhere
What is SHINE?
SHINE is Spreading Hope in Neighborhoods Everywhere. Led by Catholic Charities and inspired by Pope Benedict’s encyclical, God is Love, this social ministry renewal is an effort to celebrate and awaken the service element of the Catholic faith. Our ultimate goal is to inspire more Catholics and Catholic institutions to respond to the needs of the suffering through the ministry of charity.
SHINE will be launched on October 1, 2009, at a conference-style gathering of all pastoral and social ministry leaders. This day will inspire, educate and equip us with tools to expand social ministry. This year of renewal will be an opportunity for the entire archdiocese to focus on the social mission of the Church – “as we go forth to love and serve the Lord.”

Goals of SHINE!
- More individuals and families in our communities who are suffering will be served by Catholics and Catholic institutions
- People will experience the conversion of heart that results from service
- Parishes will begin or expand their own parish social ministry with a foundation of knowledge to take action
- New collaborations will be formed between parishes, Catholic Charities, and other Catholic social service ministries (Catholic health care, education, St. Vincent de Paul, etc.) enabling more and better service to be provided
- Catholic Charities will become known to others as a resource for beginning or enhancing social ministry and for social ministry education
- Parishes will see social ministry as an integrated part of parish life – not a separate ministry left to certain individuals within a parish
- Expand the knowledge of and involvement in the current ministries of Catholic Charities
