Holy Family Services: Emergency Shelter and Two-Year Transitional Home

Holy Family Shelter

Holy Family Shelter has been in operation since 1984 having never closed its doors. Each night 55 to 85 individuals sleep safely within the walls of Holy Family Shelter.  The shelter has 22 private rooms where families can live for 30 to 45 days.  When demand exceeds room capacity, we must temporarily place families in the shelter’s living room until a private room becomes available or other arrangements can be made. The use of this “emergency overflow plan” has become a regular occurrence as we try to meet the current need for services. The shelter is capable of admitting families on a 24-hour basis.

In an attempt to assist the whole family, Holy Family Shelter serves families defined as the following:

  • Married couples without children
  • Married couples with children
  • Single parents with children
  • Single pregnant females

Each year Holy Family Shelter serves:

  • More than 300 homeless families
  • 1,000 homeless individuals
  • More than 600 homeless children

The families who live at the shelter have no other housing available to them and may be living with a relative, been evicted from their home, or living in their car or on the street. Many of our families are either unemployed or underemployed and have difficulty consistently paying their housing and utility costs. A significant percentage of the families served by Holy Family Shelter have issues with developmental disabilities, mental illness, alcohol or drug dependency, or are fleeing a domestic violence situation.
